Abstract:
Unmanned systems, especially unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have shown great potentials in civil applications in complex and demanding missions. Recently, much research and development has been done for UAVs to operating in complex and unknown environments, especially GPS-denied environments. In this presentation, we will present the in-depth research in the advanced autonomous systems on UAVs that are combined with sensors and electronics specially developed to automate flight process in GPS-denied environments, such as below the forest canopy or indoor environments. The sensors and algorithms plan the drones’ flight paths, make sense of where they are, and enable the drones to fly according to the desired flight paths while ensuring that they do not collide with obstacles. All these are done automatically with no human intervention. Several related applications of the autonomous systems on UAVs will be presented too.
